BURUNDI’S PRESIDENT DIES ON SEAT
After 15 years in power, Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza dies of cardiac arrest at age 55. He was due to step down in August, but had been hospitalised on Saturday after feeling unwell. Leaders across the world have paid their tribute;
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his sadness on Wednesday at the passing of outgoing Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza. Nkurunziza’s death, which came after Burundi concluded a peaceful electoral process to elect his successor, was announced by the country’s government on Tuesday, which added that the president had died at the age of 55 after a “short illness”.
He was the second democratically elected president and the first president after the country’s civil war.
